Gilbert Wheel Toy

Ca. 1920

Here we have one of A. C. Gilbert's early transportation-themed construction toys. With this construction set one could build a number of different kinds of carts, wagons, wheel barrows, snow sleds and other riding toys. These were real toys a small child could actually ride on or use, not just models. The scooter, known as an Irish Mail, was a featured model.

Three different sizes of wheel toy sets were available, and this set is the largest. It is very heavy, about 30 lbs., and is too heavy for the thin wooden box it came in. As a result, very few of these complete sets exist with their original boxes.
