Radio Station Call Letters - What do they mean?
Call letters are used to identify broadcast stations. Stations located east of the Mississippi River begin with "W." Stations west of the river begin with "K." There are a few exceptions for some old stations such as KDKA in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; WOAI in San Antonio, Texas; and WDAF in Kansas City, Missouri.
Most designations are random grouping of letters. Some have meaning such as KSFO (San Francisco, California), KSL (Salt Lake City, Utah), WGN ("Worlds Greatest Newspaper," The Chicago Tribune), WNYC (New York City), WLS (Worlds Largest Store, Sears Roebuck and Co.,) WBBM (The Broadmore Ball Room, Chicago).
