Local Museums

Cupertino Historical Museum - Non-profit corporation dedicated to collecting, preserving and exhibiting Cupertino history to the community.

DeSaisset Museum - The Museum, located at Santa Clara University, offers a variety of collections of fine art, decorative art, and historic, anthropological, archeological artifacts.

Gilroy Museum - Organization preserving and exhibiting Gilroy history to the community.

Harris-Lass Historical Museum - The Harris-Lass Historic Museum is located in Santa Clara on the last remaining farming site in the city. Exhibit includes a renovated and furnished two story house in Italianate style, plus barn, tank house, summer kitchen and chicken coop.

History San Jose - History San Jose manages two sites and a collection of over 500,000 historical artifacts from Santa Clara Valley. Sites include History Park in Kelley Park and the Peralta Adobe & Fallon House in downtown San Jose.

Japanese American Museum of San Jose- The Japanese American Museum of San Jose (JAMSJ) collects, preserves, and disseminates the culture and history of Japanese Americans in the Santa Clara Valley.

Jehning Family Lock Museum- Discover a wealth of locks, keys, locksmithing tools, safes, and hundreds of other fascinating items from everyday house keys to intricately designed locks and escutcheons, safes once stuffed with money and handcuffs that held criminals of old.

Moffett Field Historical Museum - Dedicated to the preservation of historical artifacts from the Navy, Army and NASA at Moffett Field since the base was created in 1933. Its goal is to capture the heritage of Moffett Field and to pass this information on to future generations.

New Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum - The museum presents visitors with an interesting array of exhibits about the history of mercury mining and the lifestyles of mining communities at New Almaden. Website temporarily unavailable.


Oakland Museum of California - This museum specializes in arts, history and natural sciences of California.


Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum - The museum houses the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts on exhibit in the western United States -- including objects from pre-dynastic times through Egypt's early Islamic era.

San Jose Muesum of Quilts and Textiles - The San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles promotes the art, craft and history of quilts and textiles and provides a serious venue for all artists working with textiles, filling a void left by larger institutions with a narrower view of what defines artistic expression. Its exhibits and programs promote the appreciation of quilts and textiles as art and provide an understanding of their role in the lives of their makers, in cultural traditions, and as historical documents.

Stanford University/Cantor Center for Visual Arts - Collections on view in 27 galleries, special exhibitions, and stimulating educational programs and events, the Center is a cultural hub of the Peninsula, and an enriching resource for the University's teaching program.

Computer History Museum This site focuses on the history of computing, with a searchable time line of events and inventions. Many photos and online exhibits. Some items are unique.

Exploratorium - A museum of science, art and human perception. Founded in 1969 to create a culture of learning through innovative environments and programs. Located in the San Francisco Marina district.

Hiller Aviation Museum - Exhibits, including historic aircraft, highlight the many historic aviation advancements native to Northern California, and show how technologies resident here today will shape the future of air transportation. Located in San Carlos near airport.

Intel Museum - At the Intel Museum in Santa Clara, you can experience the power of computer chips first hand, and the evolution of their development. Explore the pages of this site and interact with our Web movies to learn more about the museum and computer chips.



Tech Museum of Innovation - The San Jose Tech Museum of innovation offers many hands-on and interactive exhibits teaching the principles of many modern technologies.


Wings of History Air Museum - Non-profit organization dedicated to aviation history through education, preservation, restoration and flight. Museum located in Morgan Hill at South County Airport.

Scientific American - 19th Century - Operated by the Electronic Historical Publications with the University of Rochester, this site is not affiliated with the Scientific American Magazine of today. Lots of material about inventors and inventions of the 1800s in articles from the pages of the Scientific American of that era.

Smithsonian Institution: Lemelson Center at National Museum of American History Much information about invention and inventors, including some virtual exhibits.

U.S. Patent Office - Very comprehensive site with all you ever wanted to know about patents, right from the office that issues patents in the United States.

Historic Houses, Gardens and Other Properties

Ainsley House - Historical museum and 1925 Tudor-Revival home in Historic Downtown Campbell.

Ardenwood Historic Farm - Farm life as it was near the turn-of-the-century. Draft horses still pull wagons, rail cars and plows. The land still grows the kinds of crops George Patterson tended 100 years ago, and the farmyard is still full of animals.


Campbell Historical Museum - Changing exhibits about Home Life,Recreation, Work, and Community provide insights into the daily life experiences of others who have traveled this way before.

Elizabeth F. Gamble Garden Center - A restored early twentieth century Palo Alto estate. As a community horticultural foundation, it is dedicated to preserving the property as a horticultural center offering opportunities for education and participation to all within the tranquil setting of an urban garden.

Filoli - The Georgian Revival house, built between 1915 and 1917, is a preserved estate located in Woodside, was created by Mr. & Mrs. William Bowers-Bourn II. In 1975 it was deeded to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Filoli lies within the Crystal Springs Watershed south of San Francisco.
 

Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village - The nation's largest indoor/outdoor museum. Celebrates the spirit of innovation and resourcefulness in America. Commonplace items from the past, like toasters and tractors, take their place in history alongside inventions that revolutionized our way of life. The 12-acre museum features a rich collection of objects sharing a common theme - a story of innovation.


Los Altos History House The historic J Gilbert Smith home, located on one of the last active apricot orchards in the Santa Clara Valley, is a turn-of-the-century (Built in 1905), shingled farm house built with many Craftsman-style features. History House of Los Altos was declared a State Point of Historical Interest in l987. An associated museum contains the history of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills.


Meyers House & Garden - Alameda's first and only house museum. A Colonial Revival, an architectural popular around the turn of the century. Designed by Henry H. Meyers.

Rengstorff House - Constructed in 1867 by a German immigrant Henry Rengstorff,saved from demolition and moved to Mountain View in 1980. A classic Victorian Italianate home,is available for rent throughout the year and the grounds are an ideal setting for memorable events such as weddings, special parties or off-site corporate meetings.

California Historical Society - Engages the public’s interest and participation in collecting, preserving, and presenting art, artifacts, and written materials relevant to the history of California and to support historical research, publication, and educational activities .

California History Center and Foundation - Presents exhibits, offers classes with De Anza College for California and regional studies.
Chinese Historical and Cultural Project -Non-profit organization promotes and preserves Chinese American and Chinese history and culture through community outreach activities.


Morgan Hill Historical Society and Museum - Preserves and displays the history of the Morgan Hill area.


Palo Alto Historical Association - A nonprofit association dedicated to collecting, organizing, and preserving materials pertaining to the history and heritage of Palo Alto, and to spread information about Palo Alto's history by means of programs, displays, and its official publication, The Tall Tree.

Palo Alto Stanford Heritage - PAST Heritage is a nonprofit organization advocating the preservation of the historic architecture, neighborhoods, and character of the greater Palo Alto-Stanford Area.

Preservation Action Council of San Jose - PAC*SJ is a non-profit corporation dedicated to preserving San Jose's architectural heritage through education, advocacy and events.

South Bay Historical Railroad Society - Organized to preserve the Santa Clara railroad heritage while running a working museum for benefit the community. Efforts include the renovation and preservation of the Santa Clara Railroad Depot, the Santa Clara Interlocking Tower and the two maintenance-of-way buildings. Building museum-grade HO and N scale model railroad displays to provide the public a better understanding of the different aspects of railroading.


Local Civic Organizations

City of Palo Alto - Palo Alto is a city of approximately 58,575 people, located about 35 miles south of San Francisco in Santa Clara County. It is a part of the San Francisco Bay metropolitan area, which has a population of five million. The city's boundaries extend from San Francisco Bay on the east to the Skyline Ridge of the coastal mountains on the west.

City Of Palo Alto Utilities - CPAU provides engineering, maintenance, construction, and support services necessary to supply safe, reliable, and competitively priced utilities to the businesses and citizens of the Palo Alto community.

Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce - The Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce represents over 800 businesses in the greater Palo Alto area and serves as a visitor center for Palo Alto.

A.C.Gilbert Heritage Society -The story of the man and the company that developed and popularized American Flyer trains and the Erector set.

Alexander Doll Company - The only major manufacturer of handcrafted dolls in America. Founded 75 years ago by Madame Beatrice Alexander-Behrman. She initiated a series of firsts in the toy industry: the first doll based on a licensed character (Scarlett from Gone With the Wind), which led to the creation of dolls based on characters from popular motion pictures.

American Artifacts - This site has a catalog of antique surveying, medical and other scientific instruments and farm tools. Many interesting images to see.

American Heritage - Forbes American Heritage Magazine. Anything that ever happened in America.

Antique Doll Collector - A full color magazine devoted to doll collecting. In every issue you'll enjoy articles by leading doll experts, trips to spectacular museums, important doll shows and auctions, and a calendar of events, plus advertising from the world's foremost antique doll dealers.

Antique Kitchens and Stoves - This page (on the web site of Willow Glen Kitchen and Bath) offers suggestions concerning the procurement, installation and maintenance of antique stoves.

Davistown Museum This museum in Maine has a collection of old tools and a Center for the Study of Early Tools.

Exploratorium: Pan Pacific International Exposition The Exploratorium is housed in the last remaining building from the 1915 Fair. This site has reproduced stereograph images of the fair.

Forney Transportation Museum - This Colorado museum covers all modes of wheeled transportation, everything from classic cars to antique baby carriages to steam locomotives, including the Forney tank locomotive.

Good Time Stove Co. - A diverse selection of fine antique kitchen ranges including gas, electric and woodburning ranges. All stoves are genuine antiques - not reproductions.

IBM Almaden Research Center - Much information about advanced storage technology, including disk drives.

Pacific Horticulture - Pacific Horticulture is a non-profit publication, written by and for gardeners in the west and related climates around the world.

Panama Pacific International Exposition Comprehensive survey of the Panama Pacific International Exposition This site also has much information on San Francisco history and memorabilia.

Patented Antiques: This site sells and collects mechanical antiques. 8 pages of items are displayed in an on-line collection: irons, sewing machines, food preparation devices, tools and others.
