Toy ships come in an amazing variety. Some are intended as playthings, others as souvenirs, and yet others as a form of art. The large Victorian pond sailing boat (c. 1910) is for use in ponds and pools. Note the U-shaped piece on the deck. It sets the sails and course across the pond. The bottom of the keel is heavily weighted to keep the boat upright. Here are a few more examples of the many kinds of "toys" that have been created. |
