Volunteer with MOAH!

Volunteers are the lifeline of the Museum of American Heritage (MOAH), and many have been with us since the very beginning. We rely on our dedicated volunteers in many ways and are beyond grateful for their time and commitment.

Volunteering is a great way to connect with the community and has many health benefits (it’s scientifically proven!). Whether you want to get more involved in the community or enjoy the health benefits, MOAH would love to hear from you!

We offer a variety of volunteering opportunities in the following areas:

  • Get hands-on experience working with visitors in a small museum!

    Gallery Assistants work as docents in our Palo Alto museum and assist the Gallery Supervisor. This position is great for individuals who enjoy interacting with the public and for those who would like to learn about the operations of a small museum. The position is available during the museum’s open hours – Friday through Sunday from 11am to 4pm. Assistants may volunteer for one or more hours at a time as regularly as they wish. Scheduling for this position is flexible.

    Duties

    • Welcome museum visitors

    • Answer visitors’ questions

    • Cover front desk as needed

    • Help maintain museum cleanliness and organization

    • Assist with other projects as needed

    Benefits

    • Serve as the front-facing staff for a niche museum.

    • Interact with diverse groups of visitors, who range from local residents to international travelers.

    • Assist with projects related to curation, audience engagement, and museum operations.

    • Fulfill community service hour requirements. (We can provide service verification, if needed).

    • Use the volunteer experience to bolster your resume. 

    Requirements

    You must be at least 15 years old and be able to fill out our volunteer waiver. Volunteers under the age of 18 need to provide a signature from a parent or guardian. Volunteers must provide proof of vaccination status.

  • Come help us clean, fix and research the inventions of the past!

    Our Collections Care Volunteers work at our San Carlos warehouse to maintain our 10,000+ artifact collection. This position is largely self-directed and offers a variety of possible projects. Collections Care Volunteer shifts are Mondays and Wednesdays from 2 pm to 5 pm. Volunteer as often and for as long as you like, our opportunities are flexible and can work around your schedule.

    Short-term and long-term projects are available and we are happy to help you learn new skills to help us preserve and catalog our collection.

    Duties

    • Help add artifacts to the database

    • Help pull artifacts for exhibits

    • Clean and restore artifacts in the collection

    • We will gladly sign off on community service hour requirements, including verification if necessary

    • Are you a college student and are interested in a career in the museum industry or non-profits? We would be honored to write a letter of recommendation for your portfolio

  • Help us share more information about our collection!

    Our Artifact Research Volunteers help develop information cards about our artifacts. This position is great for someone who enjoys learning about old and unusual items and has a passion for research. Volunteer as often and for as long as you like, our opportunities are flexible and can work around your schedule.

    If you have any additional ideas on how to share information about our collection we are happy to listen.

  • Calling experienced gardeners who would like to volunteer in a historic garden!

    The Museum of American Heritage is looking for garden volunteers to help us tend our garden. Some experience in gardening is preferred.

    This opportunity is available on Tuesday mornings from 10am to 12pm. Not available on Tuesday mornings, but still want to volunteer? We offer additional days and times once orientation is complete. Following completion of orientation, you may volunteer at your own time and leisure. We offer short term tasks to long term projects, depending on your preference.

    • Contribute to gardens enjoyed by visitors year-round

  • MOAH is looking to build its social media team and expand its presence in the community!

    Social media and community advertising volunteers will assist our gallery supervisor with managing our Instagram and Facebook pages and conducting outreach in the local community.

    Possible Responsibilities:

    Generating content ideas, designing signage, neighborhood canvasing, posting flyers, filming, photographing, editing, writing, and researching (depending on a volunteer’s interests and skill level).

    Scheduling is flexible, but we need our volunteers to be available sometime during our open hours, which are Fri., Sat., Sun., 11am to 4pm. We ask that new volunteers commit to fulfilling a minimum of 4 hours per month and that they remain on staff for at least 4 months.

  • Help us maintain our historic building and garden!

    Our Facilities Volunteer will help with maintenance around the Williams House, such as replacing light bulbs, installing safety equipment and putting together furniture. This opportunity will be on an as-needed basis but we are happy to work around your schedule. You will work with other people on certain projects as needed.

    Responsibilities

    • Assist the MOAH team with property maintenance as needed

    • Do minor repairs around the property and grounds

    • Assist with larger projects as needed

MOAH has in-person and virtual opportunities, and we welcome teens ages 15 years and up with a guardian’s approval!

Why Volunteer with MOAH?

We offer flexible schedules, a caring team, an opportunity to both engage with the local community and contribute to a small local museum. Volunteers can also fulfill school or community service hours, and we’re happy to provide recommendation letters for resumes or portfolios.
